Dr Jessica Clarke (AFHEA, AFRHS)

I am a historian and archaeologist, specialising in ancient Roman theatre and entertainment. I am currently an Early Career Research Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies (School of Advanced Studies, University of London). Next year, I will take up the Shortland-Jones 2025-2026 Fellowship at the British School at Rome.

In July 2024, I was awarded my PhD in Ancient History at University College London (UCL), supervised by Professor Valentina Arena, now the Camden Professor of Ancient History, at Brasenose College, University of Oxford.

I have taught for over five years in the History Department at UCL, where I was awarded Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) in recognition of my teaching.

In February of this year, I was awarded the six-month post of ‘Expert in Residence‘ at the Classical Association, and in October 2026, I was made an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (AFRHS).

I have worked on exhibitions for the Greece and Rome Department at the British Museum, and as an Archaeologist on Roman excavations for Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).

As well as academic publications, I have written for The Times Literary Supplement, BBC History Magazine, History Today, and La Repubblica

My second book will be published in 2027 by Bloomsbury and explores the politics of Roman entertainment during the assassination of Julius Caesar.

I am very grateful for the K Blundell Award, which was awarded to me by the Society of Authors in September 2025, to support the completion of this book.
