Dr Jessica Clarke (AFHEA)

I am a historian and archaeologist, specialising in ancient Roman theatre and entertainment. I am currently an Early Career Research Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies (University of London), and next year I will take up the Shortland-Jones 2025-2026 Fellowship at the British School at Rome. In February this year, I was also awarded the six-month post of ‘Expert in Residence‘ at the Classical Association.

I have taught for over five years in the History Department at University College London (UCL), where I was awarded Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) in recognition of my teaching. I have also worked on exhibitions for the Greece and Rome Department at the British Museum, and as an Archaeologist on Roman excavations for Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).

In July 2024, I was awarded my PhD in Ancient History, which was supervised by Professor Valentina Arena, the Camden Professor of Ancient History, at Brasenose College, University of Oxford.

As well as academic publications, I have written for The Times Literary Supplement, BBC History Magazine, History Today, and La Repubblica. My second book, exploring the creation of ancient Rome’s mass media Empire,  is represented by Nurnberg Literary Agents and will be published by Bloomsbury in 2027.
